Delhi High Court halts the use of ‘BRO CODE’ title for Ravi Mohan’s debut film following a legal dispute; next hearing scheduled for December 2025.

New Delhi – The Delhi High Court on Tuesday put a temporary embargo on the use of the title ‘BRO CODE’ for the upcoming film produced by debutant filmmaker Ravi Mohan. The interim order came after a petition was filed challenging the exclusive rights to the title, leading to a legal tussle that has stalled the project’s promotional activities and release timeline.

The hearing took place on October 28, 2025, where the bench reviewed submissions related to trademark and title entitlement concerning the phrase ‘BRO CODE’. The petitioner claimed prior rights over the title, arguing that the production house had not secured appropriate permissions before branding their film with that name.

According to court documents, the petitioner relies on prior registrations and use of the phrase in cinematic or related contexts, which could cause confusion among the audience and commercial harm. The petition urged the court to restrain Ravi Mohan’s production team from using ‘BRO CODE’ until the dispute is resolved.

In response, Ravi Mohan’s counsel argued that the title ‘BRO CODE’ is generic and widely used in popular culture, particularly referring to brotherhood and friendship themes common in films and media. The defense also highlighted that no trademark registration was required as it falls under common terminology, and the production team had conducted due diligence during the title selection process.

The Delhi High Court, after considering the arguments from both sides, issued an interim injunction stopping the use of ‘BRO CODE’ as the title of Ravi Mohan’s film pending the final decision. The bench scheduled the next hearing for December 2025 to allow more evidence and submissions on the matter.

Industry experts note that title disputes in the Indian film industry are not uncommon, especially with an increasing number of productions and the overlapping use of popular phrases. Such legal challenges can impact marketing campaigns, distribution deals, and release dates, adding to the pressure on new filmmakers.

Ravi Mohan, who had planned to launch his first production under the ‘BRO CODE’ banner later this year, now faces a delay caused by this legal hurdle. The producer is reportedly exploring alternative titles while preparing for the upcoming court proceedings.

The case underscores the importance of thorough trademark and title clearance checks before launching film projects to avoid potential litigations. It also highlights the delicate balance courts must maintain between protecting intellectual property rights and recognizing generic cultural terms.

As the hearing approaches in December, stakeholders in the film industry will be closely monitoring the outcome, which could set a precedent for future disputes involving film titles and common phrases.

For now, the fate of ‘BRO CODE’ as the official title of Ravi Mohan’s debut production remains uncertain, pending the judicial review in the Delhi High Court.
