US Retailers Boost Private-Label Thanksgiving Meals to Offer Budget-Friendly Options

As Thanksgiving approaches, major US retailers including Walmart and Target are promoting affordable private-label meal options to help consumers manage holiday expenses amid economic pressures. These budget-friendly offerings provide customers with cost-effective alternatives for traditional Thanksgiving dinners.

US retailers like Walmart and Target promote affordable private-label Thanksgiving meals, offering budget-friendly holiday dinner options amid economic concerns.

As Americans prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, leading US retailers are emphasizing cheaper private-label meal solutions to accommodate consumers tightening their budgets. With inflation and economic uncertainty impacting household spending, stores like Walmart, Target, and others are launching and promoting a variety of affordable Thanksgiving meal kits and packaged foods under their own brands.

Thanksgiving, traditionally a time for gatherings centred on large meals, can be costly, with expenses for turkeys, sides, desserts, and beverages quickly mounting. To address this, retailers are expanding their private-label product lines, which typically come at lower price points compared to national brands, allowing shoppers to create complete holiday meals without overspending.

Walmart has introduced several new private-label Thanksgiving bundles that include turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and dessert options, priced significantly below comparable branded products. Jennifer Martinez, Walmart’s Senior Vice President of Grocery, stated, “We understand families want to enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving meal without the stress of high costs. Our private-label offerings provide quality and value to make celebrations accessible for all.”

Similarly, Target’s Good & Gather brand is offering curated meal kits featuring classic seasonal dishes. The kits cater to small and large households and can be purchased individually or as a package. Target spokesperson David Kim said, “Our focus is on delivering fresh, tasty meals that fit diverse budgets. This holiday season, more customers are seeking convenience paired with affordability, which our private-label lines are designed to provide.”

Other retailers, including Kroger and Costco, have also ramped up promotions for their in-house Thanksgiving products. Kroger’s Simple Truth brand, known for its natural and organic foods, offers competitively priced holiday staples to attract health-conscious shoppers who also want to save.

Industry analysts note that private-label products have gained increased acceptance over recent years, boosted by consumers’ growing willingness to try store brands in pursuit of better value. Thanksgiving provides a strategic opportunity for retailers to showcase these products when grocery spending spikes.

Data from the National Retail Federation indicates that average Thanksgiving spending is expected to rise slightly this year, but many consumers report planning tighter budgets. The expansion of affordable private-label meal options aligns with this trend, offering shoppers alternatives that do not compromise on taste or tradition.

Retailers are also incorporating omnichannel selling strategies, allowing customers to browse and purchase meal kits online for in-store pickup or delivery, enhancing convenience during the busy holiday season.

As Thanksgiving nears, the emphasis on budget-friendly private-label meals reflects broader shifts in consumer behavior and retailer strategies, aiming to balance quality, price, and convenience in a challenging economic environment.
